Calico Hickory End Grain Countertop
Handcrafted in Colorado from sustainably sourced American Hickory, our custom calico hickory end grain butcher block countertops offer exceptional hardness, strong natural color variation, and a durable surface built for serious prep work. Each countertop is made to order by our artisan woodworkers and customized to your exact specifications for kitchens, islands, prep stations, workspaces, bar tops, and more.
American Calico Hickory
American Hickory is one of the hardest and most durable domestic hardwoods, known for its contrast between pale blond sapwood and warmer medium-brown heartwood. Calico Hickory highlights that full natural range, creating a bold, varied surface with strong grain movement and substantial character from block to block.
In end grain construction, Calico Hickory creates an active block pattern with high contrast, visible grain texture, and a durable working surface suited to demanding kitchens and prep areas.
End Grain Butcher Block
End grain butcher block is made by arranging the ends of hardwood blocks upward, creating a durable surface designed for cutting, chopping, and heavy kitchen use. This construction style is prized by cooks and serious home kitchens because the wood fibers are oriented vertically, helping the surface absorb knife impact more effectively than edge grain or face grain construction.
Our end grain countertops are built with an offset block layout to support structural integrity and create a natural, balanced pattern across the surface.
Finish Options
Every countertop is made to order and available in a range of sizes, thicknesses, edge profiles, and finish options. Choose from food-safe finishes including mineral oil and beeswax, tung oil, Rubio Monocoat, or our durable Impermio film finish for enhanced moisture and stain resistance.
Rubio Monocoat is available in a range of colors, which can be reviewed on the Rubio Monocoat color guide. Some Rubio color selections may require additional charges depending on the color, application requirements, or project specifications.

Measuring & Ordering
This custom calico hickory end grain butcher block countertop is built to your selected dimensions, thickness, edge profile, finish, and project details.
Enter your countertop dimensions in whole inches, then use the “Plus” fields to add any fractional inch measurement. Width or depth is measured across the grain, while length is measured in the direction of the layout. For more help, see our sizing guidelines.
Each countertop is made to order based on the dimensions, thickness, edge profile, finish, and project details you select. If your project requires unusual sizing, special cutouts, matching pieces, or custom edge details, include those notes when ordering or contact us before placing your order.
For the most accurate fit, we recommend confirming your final measurements after cabinets, supports, or appliances are installed. Custom wood countertops are built to the dimensions provided, so careful measuring is important. To understand the full process from order to delivery, visit our From Design to Delivery page.
Lead Time & Shipping
Most custom end grain butcher block countertops with a mineral oil finish are ready to ship in approximately 1–2 weeks. Lead times may vary based on order size, wood availability, production schedule, and project complexity.
Finish selection can affect production time. Rubio Monocoat typically adds about 3 days. Pure tung oil and Impermio Film Finish typically add about 5–7 days because they require additional curing and handling time before the countertop can be packaged safely.
End grain construction, larger countertops, multiple-piece orders, custom edge profiles, cutouts, or special project notes may also extend lead time. We will contact you if your order requires clarification before production.
Countertops are carefully packaged for shipment after finishing and final inspection. Shipping time depends on destination, size, weight, and carrier requirements. Before delivery, please review our shipping and receiving guidelines so you know what to expect when your countertop arrives.
Installation & Care
Allow your countertop time to acclimate to its installation environment before securing it in place. Store it flat, fully supported, and away from direct heat, moisture, or extreme humidity changes.
Countertops should not be left uninstalled for more than two weeks. Solid wood responds to changes in temperature and humidity, and extended storage without proper installation can increase the risk of movement.
End grain butcher block used as a cutting surface requires regular maintenance. Follow the care instructions for your selected finish, avoid standing water, and recondition the surface as needed. For complete guidance, review our installation and care instructions before your countertop arrives.
Please Note
Calico Hickory intentionally includes strong natural variation in color, grain, figure, and block layout. Pale blond sapwood, warmer medium-brown heartwood, mineral streaks, knots, color transitions, and other character marks may be present and are expected features of this wood selection. Natural aging, finish choice, and exposure to light will also affect the appearance of Hickory over time.
