Understanding Wood Hardness
The Janka hardness rating measures how resistant a wood species is to denting and wear. It is one useful reference when comparing hardwoods for countertops, island tops, tables, shelving, and other working surfaces.
A higher Janka number generally means the wood is harder. A lower number generally means the wood is softer and more likely to show dents from impact.
That said, hardness is only one part of the decision.
Species selection should also consider grain structure, color, stability, finish compatibility, repairability, intended use, and the environment where the surface will live.
What the Janka Rating Measures
The Janka test measures the force required to embed a steel ball halfway into a wood sample. In the United States, the result is usually shown in pounds-force, or lbf.
For example, a species rated at 1,450 lbf requires more force to dent than a species rated at 950 lbf under the same test conditions.
This makes the Janka scale useful for comparison, but it should not be treated as a complete performance rating.
Why Hardness Matters for Hardwood Surfaces
For countertops, islands, tables, and commercial surfaces, hardness can affect how the wood responds to daily use.
Harder woods may offer better resistance to dents and compression marks. Softer woods may show use more quickly, especially in high-traffic areas or where heavy objects are handled regularly.
But harder is not always better.
Some very hard woods can be more difficult to machine, finish, or repair. Some medium-hard woods perform extremely well because they have stable grain, appropriate construction, and the right finish for the application.
The best surface is not simply the hardest species. It is the right species, construction, and finish for the way the surface will be used.

These numbers are useful as a comparison point, but natural variation is normal. Actual performance can vary based on the board, cut, moisture content, construction method, finish, and environment.
Hardness Is Not the Same as Durability
A common mistake is choosing wood by Janka rating alone.
Durability depends on more than dent resistance. A hardwood surface also needs to be designed around wood movement, moisture exposure, finish type, edge details, joinery, use conditions, and maintenance.
For example, a very hard species can still fail if it is installed incorrectly or exposed to uncontrolled moisture. A moderately hard species can perform well for years when it is properly specified, finished, installed, and maintained.
Wood is a living material. It responds to humidity, temperature, water, and use. Good results come from respecting those conditions, not ignoring them.
Choosing a Species for Your Project
For active kitchen surfaces, commercial counters, and hospitality installations, hardness is worth considering. But it should be weighed alongside the look, grain, repairability, maintenance expectations, and how the space will be used.
For tables, shelving, and decorative surfaces, the right choice may depend more on appearance, size, finish, and stability than on maximum hardness.
For cutting surfaces, countertops, and high-use work areas, finish selection and care are just as important as species.
